Eat The Yellow Melon! Stay Hard!!

Okay, it’s the official kickoff to summer!! Time for the Cookouts and garden fresh seasonal foods including watermelon.  Watermelon comes in a number of varieties and has been known to provide ingredients that relax the body’s blood vessels thereby improving the heart and circulatory system, help to maintain a good immune system and a recently discovered benefit that it also provides Viagra-like effects without all of those horrible side effects.  That’s right, that juicy red fruit can help out in the bedroom.

Actually, watermelon is another in the list of red foods that keeps continuing to amaze scientists with their health benefits.  Watermelon, guava, tomatoes, strawberries, red grapefruit and rosehips top the list of foods that deliver a direct punch through a substance called lycopene to cancers like breast and prostate cancer, help to lower LDL or bad cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.  Greater quantities of lycopene are available in vine-ripened tomatoes and when you cook the tomatoes and make sauces and soups using a little olive oil!! Making homemade tomato basil sauce during the summer with ingredients from my garden is one of my favorite things to do.

How though, does watermelon work like Viagra? Drugs like Viagra work by inhibiting an enzyme that inactivates something called cGMP, which would otherwise dilate penile blood vessels. Thus, enzyme inhibition means less inactivation, which means more cGMP, which means more blood flow which means more erections and more sex.  Another way to boost cGMP levels, though, is by going to the other side of the equation and stimulating the enzyme that makes it, which is a role played by nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is made from arginine, arginine  can be produced by citrulline, and so researchers tested men to see what would happen if they ate more citrulline. Their results were published in the journal Urology: “Oral Citrulline Supplementation Improves Erection Hardness in Men With Mild Erectile Dysfunction.”

The consumption of citrulline allowed for a 68% increase in monthly intercourse frequency. The men were given supplements, but citrulline can be found naturally in watermelon. How much might one have to eat to match the dose they used in the study? Three and a half servings a day, but yellow water melon has about 4 times as much, so just a serving a day—one wedge, one sixteenth of a modest melon should work just as well. Yaawwwlllll!! 1/16 of a yellow melon!!!

Don’t believe me?  Find the documentary  Game Changers and go look at it.  Full of life changing TRUTH!!!  Your sex life cannot be at its best if the blood vessels are full of atherosclerotic plaque. And, for men, the first sign of heart disease - canary in the coal mine - is erectile dysfunction. My husband and I have always enjoyed our sex life.  But, baaaaby, when we went plant based in 1996, I swear, we were shocked with how things got even better.  It’s been a great ride I tell ya.

Make sure there’s plenty yellow melon at the cookout this weekend!! Then cue the music!!  Somebody is about to have a paaaaarty!!!  Have a fabulous Memorial Day Weekend!! Oh, and if you have some folk coming ova who are plant powered, here’s what the hubby and I do for the holiday What's on Your Vegan Grill?
